Books

There are not that many books on Spanish wine and certainly few which are worth buying. What follows is a list which I feel are worth reading and keeping.

Spanish Wine

Let’s Open a Bottle: My Journey Through the Spanish Wine Revolution
- Brian Murdock
A highly entertaining and knowledgeable insight into what’s what in Spanish vineyards. Murdock knows his stuff and also provides an insight into the culture and people of Spain.

The New Spain: A Complete Guide to Contemporary Spanish Wine
- John Radford
A comprehensive but rather straight-laced overview written by Decanter Wine Magazine’s chief writer on Spanish wine. Attractively presented and good as a general reference book.

Guia Peñin: A Guide to the Wines of Spain
- José Peñin
Until 2005 this guide was available only in Spanish but it is now published in English. It is a must for anyone interested in Spanish wine since there is nothing to rival its completeness which covers nearly all the wines in Spain together with tasting notes. Peñin uses a 100 point scale to classify the wines and in my experience it is pretty accurate.

Wine Tasting

Michael Broadbent’s Wine Tasting
- Michael Broadbent
A pocket guide that covers all aspects of wine tasting and winetastings written by someone who’s tasted more than his fair share of wines. A handy volume.

The Sensational Liquid: A Guide to Wine Tasting
- Malcolm Gluck
Unpretentious, entertaining and enlightening guide to winetasting even if the author revels a little in his role as a debunker of wine mystique. Nonetheless, just the fact that he describes wine as a ‘sensational liquid’ says it all.

General Wine Books

Wine Snobbery: An Insider’s Guide to the Booze Business
- Andrew Barr
This book ruffled a few well-groomed feathers in the wine world when it was first published. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on champagne which gives an interesting insight into the ferociously protected world of an often overrated sparkling wine. Difficult to find but worth seeking out.

The Oxford Companion to Wine
- Jancis Robinson
The ultimate wine reference book. Everything you could ever want to know about wine and wonderful to browse through - preferably with a glass of wine in your hand. Expensive but worth every penny.
